Vishal Thanik, MD
Vishal Thanik, MD is a board certified plastic surgeon and co-founder of Altris Reconstructive Wellness, a specialty practice on the Upper East Side of Manhattan focused entirely on breast reconstruction.
His clinical work centers on secondary and revision breast reconstruction, complex primary reconstruction, and survivorship care. Much of his practice is devoted to patients living with a result that looks acceptable but does not feel right, whether that means persistent discomfort, a limitation they were told to live with, or a reconstruction that has never quite become their own. Understanding why a reconstruction feels the way it does, and being honest about what can and cannot be improved, is the center of how he works.
Dr. Thanik trained in plastic surgery at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, where he later served on faculty and helped train reconstructive surgeons for over a decade. He is also fellowship trained in hand surgery, a background in peripheral nerve anatomy that informs his approach to nerve-related pain and functional recovery after breast surgery.
He co-founded Altris with Dr. Katie Weichman around a shared conviction: that reconstruction is not finished when the incisions heal, and that recovery should be measured in comfort, function, and the return of an ordinary life. The practice's whole-person approach to survivorship care follows from that conviction.
Dr. Thanik writes regularly with Dr. Weichman in the practice's Expert Insights series, where they take patient questions about breast reconstruction seriously enough to answer them at length.
Patients seeking a second opinion on an existing reconstruction, or considering reconstruction for the first time, can reach the practice at (917) 633-5750.
