What is reconstructive wellness, and why does it matter?

What is reconstructive wellness, and why does it matter?

Reconstructive wellness is the work that surrounds surgery. It is the careful, deliberate effort to understand the whole patient: their nutrition, sleep, physical conditioning, metabolic health, and emotional readiness, and to optimize each of these in service of a better surgical result and a fuller recovery.

None of this is new. The principles behind it are well established in the surgical and rehabilitation literature, and they are taught and practiced in academic medicine. What is rare is the consistent application of these principles in everyday surgical practice. The reasons are practical: most surgeons do not have the time, the structure, or the financial incentive to evaluate and optimize a patient across all of these domains before operating on them, and to continue that work afterward.

We do. We built Altris around it.

What this is, and what it is not

Our recommendations are drawn from peer-reviewed research and from our collective decades of academic practice. We are circumspect about claims that outrun the science, and we focus on the interventions with the clearest evidence of benefit: nutritional optimization, structured physical conditioning, sleep, behavioral health, and metabolic preparation.

We are not in the business of selling supplements, peptides, or protocols that sound exciting but lack rigorous support. Our interest is in what we can confidently say will help a patient prepare for surgery, recover from it, and feel better in the years that follow.

What we evaluate at your first visit

Before any surgical planning, we take time to understand where you are starting from. Our intake assessment goes well beyond the standard medical history and includes:

  • Metabolic health. Blood sugar control, body composition, and indicators of recovery capacity.
  • Nutrition. Diet quality, protein intake, and any deficiencies that could affect healing.
  • Sleep. Quality, duration, and any disruptions that affect recovery and pain tolerance.
  • Exercise capacity and mobility. Strength, range of motion, and how your body moves.
  • Emotional and mental health. How you are processing your cancer journey and what support you have in place.

All of it matters. All of it shapes what is possible.

Prehabilitation: preparing for surgery

Surgery places significant physiologic stress on the body. The evidence on prehabilitation, structured preoperative optimization across surgical disciplines, is consistent: patients who arrive at surgery in better baseline condition have fewer complications and recover faster. This is the same principle that drives enhanced recovery protocols at every major academic surgical center.

Prehab at Altris is a structured protocol tailored to each patient's starting point. We address the same domains we evaluate at intake: metabolic health, nutrition, sleep, physical conditioning, and emotional preparation. The goal is to reduce the strain of surgery and create the conditions for the best possible recovery.

Posthabilitation: optimizing recovery

Recovery does not happen by accident. After surgery, we continue the work that began with prehab. Our posthabilitation protocol supports a smoother, more complete recovery and helps patients reclaim function over time. This includes guided return to activity, nutritional support, and ongoing assessment of how the body is responding.

Long-term partnership

For patients who want it, our involvement does not end when recovery does. We serve as long-term medical advocates, helping patients navigate questions that arise in the years that follow and connecting them with vetted specialists in our network when other concerns come up.

Why this matters

The operating room is one part of a surgical outcome. The condition of the patient walking into it and the care they receive afterward are equally consequential. Reconstructive wellness is our name for taking all three seriously, applied with the rigor of academic medicine and the time and attention of a small, deliberate practice.
